Inexpensive sediment filtration; good only if you have reliable drinking water, August 27, 2013

When considering water filters, don’t go by price alone. Not all water filters are the same and you should be aware of what these can and cannot do. Water filters are rated in microns, and divided into classes, and lower is better.

This is a Class III filter (5 to 15 microns). That means the pores are relatively large and will only filter out anything larger than 5 microns, like sediments and chlorine. The Centers for Disease Control and other water filtration experts recommend filters that are 1 micron or less for protection against microbes and disease-causing organisms. If you live in an area with safe, reliable water, then perhaps this filter suits your needs. It removes “Chlorine Taste and Odor, Sand, Sediment, Silt, and Rust.” That’s it. It doesn’t remove lead, mercury, or any other contaminants. A 5 micron filter will let water parasites, bacteria, cryptosporidium, giardia, pass through the pores. Google “CDC Choosing Home Water Filters & Other Water Treatment Systems” for a very good guide on understanding and choosing the right filters for your home.

This fits in my GE SmartWater undersink water filtration system. I live in NYC where the water is reasonably clean (if I’m to believe the city’s published water quality reports). For drinking water, I’ll still use my PUR 2-Stage Water Pitcher Replacement Filter, 4-Pack. The stated duration of this product is 3 months but that, of course, depends on how much water you run through the system. Made in China.

It is so cheap nowadays to install your own whole house water system, I really don’t know why so many people still deal with the nasty/smelly municipal water that tastes horrible, ruins appliances and fixtures (from all the sediment and chemicals), etc. The housings can be purchased for around $25-40/ea, and these filters are dirt cheap. The only other cost is some PVC pipe and fittings for installation. When all is said and done, you could have a whole house filtration system for under $100 (assuming you install it yourself).

It’s recommended to use a sediment filter inline *before* this carbon filter. The carbon filter’s job is to remove the smells, chlorine, and other nasty chemicals, so you don’t want it getting clogged up with sediment and becoming less effective. Let the sediment filter handle that part.

Another note… be conscious of what micron level you choose. The lower the (micron) number, the better it filters the water. However, the tradeoff is that if you get too low of a micron rating, you will decrease your water pressure. 5 micron is generally no problem with most municipal water pressure, but getting down in the 1 or 2 micron range will probably drop your pressure some…unless you have really high water pressure to begin with.

    Excellent Fliters, August 18, 2013

We have well water here in northern Florida, and our water has a slight sulfur smell to it. The Filtrete filters with the carbon wrap have managed to completely eliminate the smell of the water. The filter doesn’t seem to add any other odors or taste to the water, so with these installed we have just clean tasting water with no odd odors. These are also effective at filtering sediment, which keeps the sand out of the pipe which wreaks havoc on plumbing otherwise. The filters have rubber seals at the top and bottom, which can be bumped loose when installing them, so make sure they stay in place when installing the filter in the filter housing. These fit our Kenmore whole-house filter housing perfectly.
