    Great d-lux starter kit!, December 30, 2010

I’m new to home wine making and decided on this kit based on price, components, and the positive Amazon reviews. I bought this along with one of the concentrate kits on Amazon (which are a great bargain by the way esp with free Prime shipping). My batch is almost ready for bottling and the wine is actually pretty good. Anyway, back to the kit…

It arrived in about a week from across the country and was packed very, very well. Glass carboy fully intact, all parts accounted for. You can get by very well with what is in the kit, but there are of course lots of other toys you can buy from this vendor and others to make your life easier (e.g., large funnels, no rinse sanitizer Star-San, carboy brush, sample thief) as well as more yeast and concentrates, etc. I bought another $80 or so in equipment from this vendor and got free shipping (code comes with kit) and super fast delivery.

Bottom line: Great vendor (learn to brew), great kit…. would buy it again and would recommend to anyone wanting to give wine making a go at home at a very decent price point.

Great starter equipment kit, February 20, 2014

    The good:
    – The DVD was great for a good overview and understanding of the wine-making process
    – Hydrometer is good.
    – The glass carboy is the best!
    – Bottle brush: pretty good. standard brush, does the job. It’d be cool if there was one that didn’t spray chemicals all over me when I took it out of the bottle, though…
    – Bottle filler: It drips a little bit more than I want to, and the tip is sensitive, so I splashed a good amount coming out of the bottle. It also doesn’t fill the bottle as high as I would like…not sure how to fix that.
    – Corks are…not that great, but hey, extra corks! Wine Kits usually come with them anyway.
    – Corker: Leaves an indent in the cork, and is a little tough, but I think its supposed to be one of the better ones out there

    Not as good:
    – Starter packets of sterilizer are not enough for a full batch.
    – Airlock and bung aren’t that great. It’s the plastic 1 chamber floaty kind.
    – Primary fermentation bucket isn’t that sturdy, I’ve already dented it and made marks from maneuvering it, and the cap fits only loosely.
    – Thermometer is not that great…it’s a sticker for your bucket. Had to invest in a floating one.
    – Siphoning tubes: Kind of short? Or maybe my counter is just tall.
    – Mixing tool — I’ve read bad reviews about it heating up when using a drill to operate. It’s just a bent up plastic stick, in my opinion, with a little cup to fill with water to “prevent over heating”

Things I invested in due to it’s poor quality or absence in the kit:
    – Floating thermometer
    – Additional cleaner/sanitizer –> Instructions are not very clear on the C-Brite, I would get 1-Step or Star San when you get full-sized.
    – Better airlock
    – Wine Thief (to get samples and get the temperature/hydrometer readings)
    – Stirring tool with 3 legs (the kit comes with a plastic spoon)

This kit provides most of the materials to make wine. You will need 23 liters or 6 gallons of wine must or a concentrate of course. Note that the carboy is six gallons like the fermenting bucket, so be ready to top off the carboy to keep oxygen out, since your rackings will remove more and more sediment/wine (I used an argon/nitrogen gas blend to keep the wine fresh after fermentation stopped). Do not overuse your sulpher cleaning packets, you will need to sterilize everything after each use, including your bottles (which will also be bought separately). For the money however this is a fine kit to make roughly 30 bottles of wine at home with.
